The Metropolitan Zone of Tampico, Madero and Altamira, is one of the tourism developments of most importance in the State of Tamaulipas by its richness of natural resources, historical sites, hotel infrastructure, and sport and aquatic installations. The Zone enjoys a privileged geographic location being only 500 Km from the US border. To the south, limits with the Pánuco River which also acts as border with the State of Veracruz. To the east with the Gulf of Mexico and to the west with the State of San Luis Potosi. Its weather is tropical sub-humid, warm and extreme, being its average annual temperature of only 24°C with maximum readings of 36.8°C and minimum of 9.7°C.
The Metropolitan Zone has an extensive highway network that links it with the rest of the country. At the boundaries of Tampico and Altamira you will find the West Loop that connects the main highways and allows you to bypass the city. On air transportation, Tampico has the Aeropuerto Internacional Francisco Javier Mina where an international and four domestic air lines operate: Mexicana de Aviación, Aerolitorial, Aviacsa, Aerocalifornia, Vivaerobus and Interjet offering daily flights to Mexico City, Toluca, Monterrey, Veracruz, Cd. Del Carmen and Villahermosa. Continental Airlines is the international airline that offers a daily flight to the city of Houston, TX.
The Metropolitan Zone is an important gateway for foreign trade since it's the only part in Mexico and one of the few in the world that has two modern and efficient ports operating from short distance one from the other. The port of Tampico, located on one of the riversides of the Pánuco River, only 10 Km from the Gulf of Mexico, is one of the main seaports of Mexico and can handle cargo and passenger ships.
